"Why is auto insurance so expensive?"
Insurance companies must charge sufficient premiums to pay for all of the damage from all of the accidents and incidents that occur. For all of the damage to all of the vehicles. For all of the injuries and medical bills and lawsuits. For all of the legitimate claims---and all of the fraudulent and inflated claims which the companies can't prove. This cost is shared among all car owners, whose shares of the cost are reflected in premiums, each affected by various factors.
In fact, auto premiums in South Carolina tend to be about average. When last checked, we were 23rd out of the 50 states in terms of lowest average auto insurance premium.
While no one loves their insurance company, everyone should want their company to collect enough in premiums to pay for all claims. After all, you would not want your company to go broke and be unable to pay your claim when you really need them.
Some things that make everyone's premiums higher . . . .
* Bad Drivers
* High DUI rates
* High injury rates (low seat-belt use, etc.)
* Roads in poor condition
* Uninsured drivers (causing everyone to pick up their costs)
* Frequent lawsuits (more frequent here than in neighboring states)
* Fraudulent claims (including claims for more than actual damages)
